REV-OIL PRO CUP: Ryan Heavner Captures Another Top Five At Myrtle Beach Speedway
ST. LOUIS, MO (AUGUST 16TH, 2012) Ryan Heavner entered the familiar grounds of Myrtle Beach Speedway over the weekend. Inching closer to his first Rev-Oil Pro Cup Series win, Heavner led thirty of the two-hundred-twenty-five laps completed. Heavner missed the ‘Halfway Leader Award’ by only one position but he did seize the ‘Hard Charger of the Race Award’ for his performance during the Sunday event.
The team was aware tires would be the winning factor heading into the event. Saturday, the team tested only on used tires in preparation for the scheduled race that evening. Following a shower of precipitation the race was rescheduled for Sunday. A plan was executed on the #77 Jeff’s Auto Sales machine, however due to many unpredictable factors the plan fell just short of the highly anticipated victory.
Heavner started the Rev-Oil Pro Cup race from outside the fourth row. The green flag dropped and the North Carolina driver quickly began pushing through the field of tough competitors, while also addressing the tire preservation strategy. As drivers crossed the line on lap seventy-five, Heavner found himself in the runner up position chasing the ‘Halfway Leader Award’. Laps ticked away, Heavner fell just short at lap one-hundred-twenty-five to Lucas Ransone for the award.
The Bob Schacht Motorsports #77 team started the second race segment from the outside front row following a mandatory pit stop for fresh rubber and adjustments. The #77 machine promptly worked the high-side of the ½ mile speedway to take over the lead position, where he would remain for the next thirty laps. The caution flag flew which brought the field back to Heavner’s rear bumper.
At this point the plan to save tires was initiated. With sixty laps remaining Ryan decided not to overly press the battles for position, slow down slightly and fall back through the field. Heavner anticipated a late race charge back to the front as the leaders began losing grip to the racing surface.
This late race plan was contaminated as series officials cut twenty-five laps off the final segment. The team expected this to play into their favor however, Heavner found himself at a strong disadvantage. The team settled for a fifth place finish, his second top five in four Pro Cup starts this season. He was also awarded the ‘Hard Charger of the Race Award’ after starting from the eighth position.
Ryan said, “We may have went a little too far with adjustments at the halfway break. It wasn’t quite what I expected at the end but we would have loved to see what those final twenty-five laps would have provided.” The team spent most of the weekend testing for the final segment of the race. However, weather did not participate this weekend.
Regardless, a lot of things were learned this weekend and the team can anticipate progress as they move forward through the season. Heavner stated, “I love the view from out front!” he explained, “The win is coming for me, I just have to be patient.”
The next scheduled race of attendance will be September 1st. Hosted at the 3/8 mile paved Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC.
