CARS PRO CUP SERIES: Ryan Heavner Finishes Just Outside Top Five At Tri-County Speedway
JULY 30TH, 2012 (ST. LOUIS, MO) Sixteen-year-old racing pilot Ryan Heavner traveled to nearby Hudson, NC this past Friday night following the CARS Pro Cup Series Tour. The #77 Bob Schacht Motorsports machine entered to compete for two-hundred-fifty laps at Tri-County Speedway where despite the expected rain, the weather turned out great for racing fans. Heavner qualified in the seventh position and finished just outside the top five in the sixth position.
This was the first event at the 4/10-mile racing complex during the 2012 racing season, thus making opening practice a challenge on each set of Goodyear Tires. Heavner found himself hovering in and out of the top five during the first and second practice. As the sun started to drift under the trees the teams entered the racing surface once again for qualifying. The #77 team put the car seventh on the started grid trailing the pole position just two tenths of a second.
As the green flag dropped on the first one-hundred-twenty-five lap segment Heavner quickly moved through the field and landed in fourth directly behind the top three. However, as the laps were counted on the scoreboard the #77 machine developed a loose condition.
Ryan began backing through the Pro Cup field. While battling for the fifth position contact was made which sent Heavner into a spin, bringing out a caution. As the race restarted he found himself one lap down to the leader. The laps continued to click away and as the first segment came to a close Heavner crossed the line in the ninth position with a flat right rear tire.
Heavner started the second race segment in the ninth position after a mandatory pit stop for new tires and chassis adjustments. On lap one, he weaved past an incident and was able to put himself back on the lead lap. The car was very stable on short runs, unfortunately following the initial caution the race went caution free. The car again fell to the loose side and Heavner was forced to locate a new groove at the high side of the track. He picked up a few more spots at the top of the racing surface, bringing the car home in the sixth position after two-hundred-fifty laps.
Heavner would like to thank the hometown crowd that chose to spend their evening supporting him and the Bob Schacht Motorsports team. Recently signed sponsor Jeff and Linda Wilkinson of Jeff’s Auto Sales were in attendance, Ryan really wanted to put on a good show for them, and unfortunately it didn’t happen. Regardless the team would like to thank all that attended to show support especially Jeff’s Auto Sales and Times Oil Corporation.
Ryan Heavner continues to P.U.S.H. and looks ahead to the next CARS Pro Cup Series event. The Bob Schacht Motorsports team plans to unload at Myrtle Beach Speedway on August 11th.
During the brief interim, Heavner will be a guest speaker on behalf of his P.U.S.H. Foundation at Reepsville Baptist Church youth block party on Saturday, August 4th at 12:30.
